Abstract Chemist, lawyer, and politician Esther A.H. Hopkins was born in 1926 in Stanford, Connecticut. In 1947, Hopkins graduated from Boston University with her B.A. degree in chemistry. She obtained her M.S. degree in chemistry from Howard University in 1949. Hopkins taught chemistry at Virginia State University for a brief period. After working in the industrial sector, Hopkins studied at Yale University to receive her second M.S. degree in 1962 and her Ph.D. degree in chemistry in 1967. Hopkins then worked as a supervisory research chemist with the Polaroid Corporation until her retirement in 1989. She returned to school to receive her J.D. degree from Suffolk University and became a patent attorney and worked as the deputy general counsel at the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. In 1999, she became the first African American selectman of Framingham, Massachusetts. She stepped down from this post in 2005, but remained active in several community organizations.
