He attended Roosevelt University where he received his B.A. degree in history in 1966, and then his M.A. degree with honors in 1968. Harris went on to receive his Ph.D. degree from Northwestern University in 1974. After briefly working at Miles College and at the University of Illinois, he was hired at Cornell University as an assistant professor in 1975. Harris was promoted to associate professor and then full professor of African American history at Cornell University where he worked until 2013. Harris also served as the director of the Africana Studies and Research Center at Cornell University, was named vice provost for diversity and faculty development in 2000, and has served as national historian for Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Harris authored Teaching African-American History, and co-edited The Columbia Guide to African American History Since 1939.;
