Abstract Jazz musician and composer Jimmy Heath was born on October 25, 1926 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Heath began playing the alto saxophone as a teenager in Wilmington, North Carolina where he formed a jazz band. In 1949, after touring with big band orchestras and forming his own big band, Heath joined Dizzy Gillespie's band with John Coltrane and Specs Wright. He took up tenor saxophone before joining the Miles Davis Quintet. In 1959, Heath recorded his debut album The Thumper. Heath formed the Heath Brothers with Percy Heath, Jr., Albert "Tootie" Heath and Stanley Cowell in 1975, recording a succession of albums, including the Grammy nominated Live at the Public Theatre. Heath became professor of music in 1987 at Queens College where he premiered his first symphonic work, "Three Ears." He was the first jazz musician to receive an honorary doctorate in music from the Juilliard School in New York.
