Abstract Jazz pianist and composer Herbert Jeffrey "Herbie" Hancock was born on April 12, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois. Learning piano at a young age, Hancock began playing jazz in high school and majored in both music and electrical engineering at Grinnell College. In the early 1960s, he signed with Blue Note Records as a solo artist. In 1963, trumpeter Miles Davis invited Hancock to join the Miles Davis Quintet. Hancock remained with the Davis Quintet for five years. After leaving the group, Hancock founded a new band called The Headhunters and later performed with the group V.S.O.P., recording albums for the Verve record label. Hancock released more than forty albums. He won fourteen Grammy Awards including the 2008 Grammy for jazz album of the year for River: The Joni Letters. It was only the second jazz album to win. Hancock served as the Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
