Abstract Civic volunteer Dorothy Runner was born May 6, 1920, in Nitro, West Virginia. She graduated from Garnet High School in 1937 and earned her B.A. in social work from Howard University in 1941 before pursuing graduate studies at the University of Chicago. A member of Alpha Kappa Alpha and the Girlfriends, Runner has led an active volunteer life. She was a founding member of the Hyde Park-Kenwood Auxiliary of the Illinois Children's Home and Aid Society, and the South Side Auxiliary of Planned Parenthood. She helped establish the 63rd Street Outpatient Clinic and served as adviser to the Museum of Science and Industry's Black Creativity Exhibit, as a board member of the Art Institute of Chicago and of Urban Gateways. She raised $100,000 for Provident Hospital's Building Fund and received the Outstanding Volunteer Award from the National Society of Fundraising Executives in 1985. She and her husband, Charles, lived in Chicago.
