| Abstract | Social activist Ruby Sales was born on July 8, 1948 in Jemison, Alabama. A participant in the civil rights movement since her teenage years, she was traumatized by the murder of her Caucasian colleague in rural Alabama during a voter registration drive in 1965. Sales attended Tuskegee Institute, Manhattanville College, Harrison, New York, and Princeton University, receiving her M.Div. degree from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1998. Sales worked as director of the Citizens' Complaint Center in Washington, D.C. Sales taught history courses on the civil rights movement at the University of Maryland and served as director of Black Women's Voices and Images, and Women of All Colors. The founding director of SpiritHouse, a spiritually oriented group that works to organize and build community, Sales was selected to be one of 30 African Americans to be spotlighted in the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. |
