Abstract Professor Fannie Theresa Rushing was born on February 3, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois. Rushing became involved in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee while still in high school. In 1961, she attended the University of Illinois, but left to become a SNCC field secretary and a Freedom School teacher. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. As coordinator of the Southern Africa Program of the American Friends Service Committee in 1976, Rushing organized an international conference on Trans National Corporations and Southern Africa. She has lectured at Northwestern University and the University of Illinois, and served as the director of Minority Services at Rosary College. Her activism has continued outside the classroom while working as an associate professor in the Department of History at Benedict University. Rushing was featured in a Chicago Freedom Sisters exhibit at the DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago.
