Abstract Entrepreneur Daymond John was born on February 23, 1969 in New York City. Upon graduation from high school, John worked as a waiter at Red Lobster before getting his start in the clothing industry. In 1992, John and three friends founded FUBU (For Us, By Us) in his mother's basement in Queens. They began making tie-top hats before a $100,000 mortgage on his mother's house provided needed capital for developing a clothing line. With endorsements from well-known hip-hop entertainers, FUBU established itself in the industry while gaining a loyal urban following among youth around the world. John broadened FUBU's empire, establishing relationships with professional sports teams and venturing into the entertainment business. He also launched y2g.com, a Web portal aimed at the untapped African American market. In 1997, John started the FUBU Foundation, a charitable organization that received approximately $1 million annually from his company. John served as a co-host of ABC's Shark Tank.
