Abstract Financial counselor and insurance executive John Lassiter was born on April 18, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois. Lassiter earned his B.S. degree in statistical economics from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1959. He earned his CLU and ChFC from American College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Lassiter worked for the U.S. Department of Labor and Social Security Administration from 1959 until 1963 when he became one of the first African Americans hired by Prudential Insurance. Between 1964 and 1965, Lassiter sold over two million dollars of life insurance. In 1968, as a supervisor, he won the Prudential President's Trophy. In the 1960s, Lassiter joined CORE, the NAACP and the Urban League. In 1984, Lassiter retired from Prudential and founded Lassiter Enterprises. On the board of Trinity Hospital and Chicago Youth Centers, he also served on the Presidential Advisory Committee of Chicago State University. Lassiter passed away on August 26, 2005 at age 68.
