Abstract Art gallery owner Isobel Neal was born Isobel Hoskins on July 28, 1933 in New York City. Neal earned her B.A. degree in history in 1955 from New York University. That same year she married attorney Earl Neal and moved to Chicago. Neal taught in the Chicago public schools from 1955 to 1975. In 1977, she received her M.A. degree in anthropology and archaeology from the University of California at Santa Barbara. Neal served on the boards of Illinois Arts Alliance, DuSable Museum of African American History, Illinois Humanities Council and New Regal Theatre. In 1986, she opened the Isobel Neal Gallery. Over the years, the gallery represented William Carter, Jonathan Green, Geraldine McCullough, Madeline Rabb, Elizabeth Catlett and many others. In 1996, Neal retired, passing Chicago representation for many of the artists to George R. N'Namdi, though she was still active as a curator.
