520 a| Insurance executive Ronald McNeil was born on November 4, 1952 in Detroit, Michigan to Dorothy and Elijah McNeil, a homemaker and an autoworker. McNeil earned his B.S. degree in finance and economics from Wayne State University. McNeil took a job in finance at Allstate Insurance Company in 1976. McNeil was promoted to a series of management jobs, and by 1987, he was promoted to assistant vice president. He was the first and then only African American officer in finance at Allstate. In 1991, McNeil became regional vice president for the Valley Forge region where he expanded Allstate's market share in depressed black neighborhoods by working with community organizers. By 1994, McNeil was promoted to senior vice president. McNeil retired from Allstate in 2007 and devoted his efforts to a scholarship foundation created by he and his wife to encourage underprivileged youth to pursue careers in math and finance.;
