Abstract Actress Denise Nicholas was born Donna Denise Nicholas on July 12, 1944 in Detroit, Michigan. In 1964, married to Gilbert Moses, the couple became involved in the Free Southern Theater Company. Nicholas moved to New York City, and in 1967 became one of the first members of the Negro Ensemble Company. She was also cast as a character on the ABC-TV series It Takes a Thief that year. In 1969, she was cast on the popular television series Room 222 as "Liz McIntyre". Throughout the 1970s, she worked in films with Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby. In 1987, Nicholas earned her B.A. degree in drama from the University of Southern California. She returned to television with In the Heat of the Night in 1988. In 2005, Nicholas wrote her first novel, Freshwater Road, launching her career as a novelist. She received four NAACP Image Awards.
