Abstract Flight instructor and Tuskegee airman Isham Albert 'Rusty' Burns, Jr. was born July 24, 1925 in New Orleans, Louisiana and grew up in Los Angeles, California. In 1943, he joined the U. S. Army at Fort MacArthur and posted to Kessler Field in Biloxi, Mississippi. After completing basic training, he was sent to Tuskegee Institute and Air Base in Alabama. He was assigned to the 99th Fighter Squadron at Goodman Field in Kentucky in 1944 but left the military in June 1945 when World War II ended. Burns returned to California where he worked for the United States Postal Service. In 1955, he opened Rusty's Flying Service in Compton and began giving flight lessons, one of the few Tuskegee airmen in the Los Angeles area who pursued an aviation career. Burns trained more than five hundred students. He sold the business in 1971. He became an aviation consultant and retired in 1988.
