Abstract Therapist and family counselor June Dobbs Butts was born June 11, 1928, in Atlanta, Georgia. She earned her B.A. degree from Spelman College in Atlanta; and her Ed.D. in family life education from Columbia University in New York. She began her career as professor of psychology at Fisk University. She was also a researcher at Tennessee State University, Howard University College of Medicine, and Meharry Medical College. While serving on the board of directors of Planned Parenthood in the 1970's, Butts was invited to join the staff of the Masters & Johnson Institute. She was the first African American woman to work at Masters & Johnson. Butts was a visiting scientist at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta. Her research and writing focused primarily on sexual health, from teenaged pregnancy to HIV/AIDS, particularly as it relates to African Americans. Butts was widely published in Jet, Ebony and other black magazines.
