She graduated from Hofstra University in 1973 with her B.A. degree in biology, and in 1977 from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. Mendes became a resident at St. Luke's Hospital in 1978, chief surgical resident in 1981, and a fellow in vascular surgery at Englewood Hospital in 1982. Mendes' clinical research focused on effects of race on vascular disease. By 1986, Mendes was the first African American female vascular surgeon certified by the American Board of Surgery. In 1990, Mendes became assistant clinical professor of surgery at Columbia University. In 1993, she became chief of St. Luke's Division of Vascular Surgery, and in 1998, she was senior attending surgeon in the Department of Surgery. In 1999, Mendes was hired as attending vascular surgeon at the Department of Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital.;
