Abstract Magazine editor and reporter Lynn Aurelia Norment was born on February 14, 1952 in Bolivar, Tennessee. Norment attended Bolivar's all-black segregated school in 1958 before transferring to Bolivar High School in 1969. She graduated in 1970 with an academic scholarship to attend Memphis State University where she graduated magna cum laude with a degree in journalism in 1973. From 1973 to 1977, Norment was a general assignment reporter, religion editor and investigative writer for the Memphis-based newspaper, The Commercial Appeal. In 1977, Norment was hired as a freelance reporter by Ebony magazine. She wrote and edited "Sisterspeak" and "Ebony Advisor". She was recognized by Memphis State University as one of its "Outstanding Journalism Alumni" in 1991. Norment served as vice president of National Association of Black Journalists and was a board member of Habilitative Systems, Inc. Norment resided in Chicago and was a member of the editorial board of Ebony magazine.
