She earned her B.A. degree from Harvard University; and her M.B.A. in management from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management in Chicago. She began her career at First Chicago Capital Markets, Lehman Brothers, and then Mesirow Financial. At Barclays Capital, Brown served as managing director, in charge of the firm's Midwest and Southeast municipal practices. In 2003, Mayor Richard M. Daley appointed Brown chair of the Chicago Transit Authority Board. Mayor Rahm Emanuel appointed her to the board of the Regional Transportation Authority. In 2015, Brown was appointed chief financial officer of the City of Chicago. She served on several boards, including the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence and the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. She received many professional awards and recognitions, including Crain's Chicago Business' 40 under 40, and Working Mother's Legacy Award.;
