Abstract Professor Dori Maynard was born on May 4, 1958 in New York City. She was raised by her father Robert Maynard and step-mother Nancy Maynard. She received her B.A. degree in American history from Middlebury College and worked as a reporter at several newspapers. In 1992, she received a Nieman Fellowship to attend Harvard University. After her father's passing in 1993, Maynard worked on "Letters to My Children", a compilation of her father's syndicated columns with introductions written by her. She worked on The History Project at the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education. Maynard was appointed president of the Institute in 2001. She wrote articles on topics of race and diversity in the media. She worked to teach journalists to communicate openly about differences of race, class, gender, geography and generation so they could deliver more accurate accounts of news stories. Maynard passed away on February 24, 2015 at age 56.
