520 a| Journalist Maureen Bunyan was born on the island of Aruba and immigrated to the United States. Bunyan received her B.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; and her M. A. degree from Harvard University Graduate School of Education in 1980. She completed the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism Training Program for Minority Journalists in 1970. She worked briefly for WCBS-TV, the flagship CBS owned-and-operated station in New York City. In 1973, Bunyan became news anchor and reporter at WTOP-TV (now WUSA-TV) in Washington, D. C. that was owned by Post-Newsweek Stations. In 1999, Bunyan joined WJLA-TV, an ABC affiliate, in Washington D.C. as a primary anchor. Her contract was terminated by WJLA's new owner, Sinclair Broadcasting, in 2017. She was one of the founding members of the National Association of Black Journalists and the International Women's Media Foundation. She won a number of awards, including several Emmys for her work.;
