Abstract Theatrical director Chuck Smith was born on March 7, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Parker High School in 1956, and after serving in the Marines, worked for the United States Post Office. In 1963, he won a role in the Dramatic Arts Guild's production of McAdam and Eve. In 1970, he landed his first paying role. Smith started teaching at Columbia College in 1983 and earned a B.A. degree in theatre in 1984 from Governors State University. That same year, Smith co-founded the Chicago Theatre Company with Douglas Alan Mann. After directing The Meeting, Smith, with actors Harry Lennix and Gregory Alan-Williams, formed the touring company, Legacy Productions. Beginning in 1992, he served as a Goodman Theatre Artistic Associate. The winner of Chicago Emmy Awards for NBC's Crime of Innocence and Fast Break to Glory, Smith was a board member of the African American Arts Alliance and a recipient of the Paul Robeson Award.
