Abstract Ambassador and professor Horace Dawson, Jr. was born in 1926 in Augusta, Georgia. Dawson received his B.A. degree in English from Lincoln University in 1949, and his M.A. degree in English and comparative literature from Columbia University in 1950. Dawson taught at the collegiate level for several years and earned his Ph.D. degree from the University of Iowa in 1961. He then he joined the Foreign Service and worked in Uganda, Nigeria and Liberia as a cultural affairs officer. Later, he became director of cultural affairs for all of Africa. After spending two years in the Philippines in the diplomatic corps, President Jimmy Carter named him ambassador to Botswana in 1979, where he became a tireless opponent of apartheid. Returning to the United States in 1983, Dawson worked at the State Department until retiring in 1989. He joined the faculty of Howard University as the director of programs on public and international affairs.
