Abstract Electrical engineer and professor Ralph Etienne-Cummings was born in 1967, in Victoria, Seychelles. He received his B.S. degree in physics from Lincoln University in 1988, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1990 and 1994, respectively. In 1995, Etienne-Cummings became an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Southern Illinois University. He served as an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University from 1998 to 2002, an associate professor at the University of Maryland from 2002 to 2004, and director of the Institute of Neuromorphic Engineering from 2002 to 2008. He became a full professor of electrical and computer engineering at Johns Hopkins University in 2008. His research interests include biomorphic robots and neural prosthetics. Etienne-Cummings has served as a visiting scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and as a visiting African scholar at the University of Cape Town.
