Abstract Politician Wellington E. Webb was born on February 17, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois. Obtaining his B.A. degree in sociology from Colorado State College at Greeley and his M.A. degree in sociology from the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley, Webb began his political career in 1972 when he was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives. In 1977, Webb was selected by President Jimmy Carter to serve as regional director of the U.S. Department of Health Education and Welfare. Elected as Denver's city auditor in 1987, he made a successful mayoral bid in 1991, becoming the first African American mayor of Denver. Accomplishments during his three terms as mayor included the new Denver International Airport, a new Mile High Stadium, expansion of the Denver Art Museum and a new African American Research Library. Past president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Webb has collaborated closely with his wife, former Colorado State Representative Wilma J. Webb.
