Abstract Pharmacist and military veteran Augustine Davis was born on November 19, 1917, in LaGrange, Texas. He earned his B. S. degree from Ohio State University and his Phar.D. from Ohio State College of Pharmacy. Davis enlisted in the segregated U.S. Navy prior to WW II he was stationed on the U. S.S. Breese at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese military launched a surprise attack on December 7, 1941. Davis, one of the few African-American gunners in the Navy manned an anti-aircraft gun on the Breese - downing enemy aircraft. Later, Davis was put in charge of an all-black anti-aircraft battery aboard the U. S. S. Essex. Admiral William "Bull" Halsey praised Davis' heroism but no official commendation for his actions was offered. After the war, Davis completed pharmacy school and retired after a long professional career. He passed away on July 5, 2014 at age 97.
