Abstract Educator Kathleen "Kat" Crosby was born in 1925 in Winnsboro, South Carolina. She received her B.A. degree from Johnson C. Smith University in 1946, and her M.A. degree from Bank Street College in New York City in 1970. In 1946, Crosby began teaching in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District. From 1967 to 1970, she worked as an in-service specialist for early childhood education. She served as principal of Billingsville Elementary School from 1970-1976. A 1976 CBS NEWS documentary highlighted her outstanding leadership in dealing with school desegregation and busing issues. She was promoted to assistant superintendent in 1976 and retired as superintendent in 1986. Crosby also served on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Charter Commission. In 1974, she was awarded the B'nai B'rith Women's Human Relations Award and was inducted into the NAACP's Hall of Fame in 1975. She was also named WBT Radio's Woman of the Year. Crosby passed away on November 13, 2012 at age 87.
