Abstract Academic administrator and professor Ione D. Vargus was born on July 19, 1930 in Medford, Massachusetts. In 1954, Vargus received her B.A. degree in sociology from Jackson College at Tufts University. She continued her studies, and in 1954, she received her M.A. degree in social service administration from the University of Chicago. Between 1969 and 1971, Vargus served as assistant professor in the Black Studies department of Florence Heller School for Advanced Studies in Social Welfare at Brandeis University while completing her Ph.D. In 1977, she published a book entitled, Revival of Ideology: The Afro-American Society Movement. In 1978, she became the first academic African American Dean at Temple University. In 1986, Vargus began researching African American family reunions. A recognized authority on family reunions, Vargus was featured in numerous magazines, newspapers and on radio and television shows across the country. In 1990, she was instrumental in founding the Family Reunion Institute at Temple University.
