Abstract Lawyer Mercer Cook was born on May 31, 1930, in Washington, D.C. He attended elementary school in Atlanta and high school in Washington, D. C. He earned his B. A. degree from Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1951; and his J. D. degree from the University of Chicago in 1956. Cook's grandfather, Will Marion Mercer Cook (1869 -1945) was a classically trained composer and collaborated on Broadway musicals. His father, (Will) Mercer Cook (1903-1987) was a U. S. Ambassador to Senegal and Nigeria. Cook began his career in private practice in 1957. From 1967 to 1970, Cook worked for the Cook County Legal Assistance Foundation. Next, Cook worked for the Illinois State Attorney's office in Cook County as an Assistant State's Attorney. In 1989, he was appointed Deputy State's Attorney. He returned to private practice in 1993 with the Gordon and Pikarski firm.
