Abstract Educator Paul Phillips Cooke was born on June 29, 1917, in New York City. Cooke attended Miner Teachers College (later known as the University of the District of Columbia) in Washington, D. C., where he earned his B.S. degree. He earned his M.A. degree in education from New York University; and his M.A. degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.; and his Ed.D. degree from Columbia University in 1947. Cooke began his career as a professor at District of Columbia Teacher's College, where he worked from 1954 to 1966. In 1966, he was appointed president of District of Columbia Teacher's College and served in that post until 1974. He was active with the World Veterans Federation; the American's Veterans Committee; the Catholic Interracial Council of Washington, D.C.; Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity; and was a lifelong member of the NAACP. Cooke passed away on July 4, 2010 at age 93.
