In high school, Gibbs was involved with the Links Unlimited program, which introduced him to Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. He graduated there with his B.A. degree in political economy in 1986. Following his graduation, Gibbs was employed by Northern Trust Bank through 1990, before working for Leo Burnett Advertising. During this period Gibbs earned his M.A. degree in marketing and finance from Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management. In 1993, Gibbs started his career at Vibe magazine as Midwest sales director. He left Vibe in 1998, for TMP Worldwide, but returned to Vibe as its president in 2000. He served as executive producer for Weekend Vibe, a syndicated weekly television show produced by the Heritage Networks. He also served as executive producer for the inaugural Vibe Awards, a prime time special on the UPN Network, in 2004.;
