Abstract Politician Mervyn Dymally was born on May 12, 1926 in Cedros, Trinidad. After traveling to the United States to study journalism in 1946, he moved to California where he earned his B.A. degree from Los Angeles State College in 1954. In 1960, he worked as a field coordinator for the Kennedy campaign, and in 1962, he won his first political office as a state representative. From there, he served as a state senator, lieutenant governor of California, and finally as a member of the U.S. Congress, where he chaired the Congressional Black Caucus. After retiring from Congress in 1992, he became a consultant, and in 2003, he was re-elected to the California general assembly. Dymally served as vice president of the Pacific Century Institute, a non-profit organization that fosters dialogue amongst Pacific Rim nations. He and his wife, Alice, had two children. Dymally passed away on October 7, 2012 at age 86.
