Abstract Choreographer and dancer Julian Marvin Swain was born on December 18, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois. Attending Stephen A. Douglas Elementary School and Wendell Phillips High School, Swain performed with Carmencita Romero in the Southside Community Art Center's Annual Artists Ball at the Savoy. In 1940, Swain studied African dance from Senegal's Assadata Dafora, becoming the lead dancer at Chicago's Club DeLisa, then forming the Co-Op Trio with Peter Green and Ann Henry. Performing with Count Basie and Duke Ellington, in 1952, the Co-Ops also toured for Larry Steele and Arthur Bragg. In 1971, Swain formed the Julian Swain Inner City Dance Theatre, performing for Festac '77 in Lagos Nigeria. Swain was a dance panelist for the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, and participated in Dance Africa. Swain was a recipient of the Black Theatre Alliance Award and the 2004 Chicago Senior Citizen of the Year Award. He passed away on April 19, 2011.
