Abstract Judge Harry Justin Elam was born on April 29, 1922, in Boston, Massachusetts, the second child of five born to Robert H. and Blanche Lee Elam. A graduate of Boston Latin School, he attended Virginia State College until 1942, then serving in the U.S. Army during World War II until 1946. He earned his A.B. degree from Boston University in 1948, and his J.D. degree from Boston University's School of Law in 1951. From 1952 to 1971, Elam worked as a prominent lawyer in Boston. During that time, Elam was a law partner of Edward W. Brooke, who went on to become the U.S. senator from Massachusetts. Then in 1971, Elam went on to become the chief justice of Boston's Municipal Court and later was appointed as an associate justice of the Massachusetts Superior Court. Elam was the first African American appointed to the Boston Municipal Court of Massachusetts. He passed away on August 16, 2012.
