She earned her B.A. degree in English and theatre at City University of New York's Lehman College, graduating summa cum laude. Her collaboration with director Vinnette Carroll resulted in nine musical productions, including Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope and Your Arms Too Short to Box With God. She was one of the first African American women cast in the daytime series, Edge of Night. Grant received a Helen Hayes Award for her performance as Sadie Delany in a two-year tour of Having Our Say in 1996. In 1999, she received the National Black Theatre Festival's Living Legend Award. Grant won a Grammy Award for Best Score from an original cast album and was nominated five times for a Tony Award. She also received an NAACP Image Award.;
