Abstract Corporate executive and coach Carver Clark Gayton was born on October 18, 1938, in Seattle, Washington. After high school, Gayton attended and graduated from the University of Washington where he was a member of the Rose Bowl-winning football team of 1960. He earned his B.A. degree in history that same year. In 1964, Gayton became the first black F.B.I. agent from the state of Washington. In 1968, Gayton became the first full-time black coach for the University of Washington. He later resigned from his coaching position and was appointed director of affirmative action programs, establishing the first affirmative action program by an institution of higher learning in the state. He was then recruited by the Boeing Company and served in different positions including corporate director of college and university relations. From 1997 until 2001, Gayton was the commissioner of Washington State Department of Employment Security, before serving as executive director of the Northwest African American Museum until 2008.
