Abstract Corporate executive Deborah Elam was born on June 1, 1961, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Elam attended Paul Lawrence Dunbar School until seventh grade, when she was accepted in the Ursuline Academy in New Orleans. Elam attended Xavier University and Louisiana State University, where she received her B.A. degree in sociology. In 1987, Elam earned her M.A. degree in public administration at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and was recruited by General Electric executive Wiley Harris as an intern. A year later, Elam joined GE's Human Resources Leadership Program. Upon completing the program, Elam began working in a variety of human resources positions for GE. In 2000, Elam became the managing director for Human Resources at GE Capital Commercial Finance. Two years later, Elam was promoted to president and chief diversity officer at GE in Fairfield, Connecticut. In 2006, Elam was appointed a company officer by GE's Board of Directors.
