Abstract Corporate CEO and lawyer Kenneth C. Frazier was born on December 17, 1954, to Otis, a janitor and Clara Frazier in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His mother died when he was twelve. Frazier received his B.A. degree from Pennsylvania State University and his J.D. degree from Harvard Law School. After graduating, Frazier worked for fourteen years at the Philadelphia law firm of Drinker, Biddle, & Reath where one of his clients as the pharmaceutical company Merck & Co., Inc. In 1992, he was hired at Merck as its general counsel. In that position, Frazier led Merck through 5,000 cases involving the medicine Vioxx. Frazier has served in a variety of leadership roles at Merck, and in 2011 was named president, CEO, and chairman of the board, making him the first African American to serve as CEO of a major pharmaceutical company.
