After graduating from Morton Upper Grade Center in 1978, Williams attended Orr High School where he was a member of the school's basketball team. He enrolled at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he graduated magna cum laude with his B.S. degree in accounting. Williams was hired as a certified public accountant for Arthur Anderson & Company. He worked there until 1988 when he became the corporate audit manager for the Baxter Healthcare Corporation. Williams went on to work for the Harpo Entertainment Group as a senior manager before starting his own business management firm, Olympus LLC. Williams was appointed to the Chicago Public School (CPS) Board in 2005 and served on the board of trustees of the CPS Teachers Pension and Retirement Fund before succeeding Michael Scott as school board president in 2006.;
