| Abstract | Educator and civic leader Mattelia Bennett Grays was born on July 26, 1931 in Houston, Texas. She received her B.A. degree from Dillard University, New Orleans, Louisiana in 1952 where she was initiated into the AKA Sorority. Grays received her M.A. degree with honors in special education from the University of Michigan. She taught in the Houston Public Schools where she was also a consultant for the Continuous Progress Learning Corporation and principal of Rogers Educational Enrichment Center. After several years in the Houston Public Schools, she worked with the University of Houston as a supervisor of laboratory experiences for teachers of culturally deprived children. She became District Three Superintendent of the Houston Independent School District in 1987. Grays served as president of the Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter and regional director of its South Central Region. She was installed as National Sorority President in 1970 and served until 1974. |
