| Abstract | City administrator and civil rights activist Sala Udin was born Samuel Wesley Howze on February 20, 1943 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1961, Udin graduated from high school and joined the Freedom Riders that summer. Upon returning, he served as the president of the local NAACP. In 1964, he worked for the Mississippi Summer Project. By 1967, Udin had become an advocate of Black Power and started Black Horizons Theatre, producing black artists' plays. Additionally, Udin helped to establish a Black Studies program at the University of Pittsburgh and published articles in The Pittsburgh Courier. He served as Councilmen for the Sixth District, his childhood neighborhood from 1995 until 2005 introducing legislation to establish a Citizen's Police Review Board and sat on numerous committees that helped the Pittsburgh community.
