Davis received his B.S. degree in broadcast communications from Washington State University in 1970. He first worked as a news reporter for Fresno, California's KMJ-TV and Portland, Oregon's KGW-TV. From 1982 to 2003, Davis served as a general assignment reporter and later as a weekend anchor for WBBM-TV in Chicago, Illinois. In addition to his work on television, Davis served as a news director and anchor for WVAZ Radio, and hosted a real estate show on WLS-AM Radio and WIND-AM Radio. In 2003, he founded and became president of John E. Davis Media, a consulting firm that assists politicians, corporate executives, celebrities and athletes. His honors included an Emmy Award for his coverage of Chicago Mayor Harold Washington's death and an Ada S. McKinley Youth Services Mentor of the Year Award.;
