Dance earned her A.B. degree and M.A. degree in English from Virginia State College - now Virginia State University - and earned her Ph.D. degree in English in 1971, from the University of Virginia. Dance taught English at Armstrong High School from 1957 until 1962, when she became an instructor of English at Virginia State University. Dance was on faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University for twenty years as an associate, assistant, and full professor of English. She worked as a professor of English at the University of Richmond from 1993 to 2012, and was named the Sterling A. Brown Professor of English at Howard University in 2013. Dance authored nine books and contributed to over a dozen other books and numerous academic journals. The College Language Association inaugurated The Daryl Cumber Dance Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.;
