520 a| Journalist Ida E. Lewis was born on September 22, 1934 in Malvern, Pennsylvania. She earned a bachelor's degree from Boston University in 1956, and went to work as a financial writer for the New York Amsterdam News. In 1959, she joined The New York Age, where she worked until 1961. At that time, Lewis moved to Paris, France, where she wrote for media outlets such as The Washington Post and Life magazine. She also interviewed African dignitaries for the BBC. In 1969, Lewis returned to the United States as a correspondent for Jeune Afrique. Lewis acted as the first editor-in-chief of Essence magazine in 1970; and in the following year, she founded Encore, an international news publication. Over the next fifteen years, Lewis worked as a political media consultant and press agent. In 1998, Lewis became the first woman editor-in-chief of The Crisis, in addition to adjunct professor position at Boston University.;
