Abstract "Since China's announcement of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in 2013, commentary on China's activity in Eurasia has proliferated. Western observers tend to portray China as an aggressive power devoted to projecting its geopolitical influence and shaping the economic world order to its advantage. This book challenges these dominant assumptions about the BRI, firstly by placing it in the context of the historical economic relationship and trading networks between China and its neighbours. It focuses on the Central Asian countries as the key region connecting China and Europe and an area whose economic links with China long predate the BRI. The book secondly proposes that today's semi-informal trade of bazaar goods between China and Central Asia forms a central aspect of Eurasian transnational trade; an aspect which is often overlooked due to a focus by commentators on formal trade deals in the region. The economic and social significance of bazaar trade is demonstrated here by examining its generation of revenues, livelihoods, and long-term relationships between Central Asian bazaar traders and their Chinese business partners. Through the consideration of historical and present-day economic connections between China and Central Asia, this book seeks to provide a deeper understanding of the context within which BRI came about and is being enacted"-- Provided by publisher.
