Abstract Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG) is a non-profit umbrella organization for LGBTI advocacy groups in Uganda. SMUG was founded in 2004 and the network currently comprises 18 organizations in Uganda offering counselling, health, and other services to the LGBTI community. As an umbrella entity, SMUG also works closely with international human rights organizations to bring attention to the persecution of LGBTI people in Uganda. SMUG now operates more openly than during the time period of the donated material (2003-2005). Victor Juliet Mukasa is the founding director of SMUG, a role which he fulfilled until 2007 when he moved to South Africa to continue his work for LGBTI rights. Mukasa is currently (2017) the Director of the Kuchu Diaspora Alliance and lives in the USA. Mukasa is a trans man and had to deal with harassment by the authorities in Uganda due to his gender status. He took the government to court and won his case against them in 2008. The collection is mainly comprised of material donated by Victor Juliet Mukasa, director of SMUG from 2004-2007. Some of this material, particularly documents with people's contact details and personal accounts, are embargoed. Documents relating to SMUG's mission and profile, as well as printed material (journals, newsletters, pamphlets, leaflets, flyers, posters, etc.) from their donors and affiliates, is open to researchers. The collection further includes documents from the Ugandan lesbian organisation FAR-UG (Freedom and Roam Uganda) of which Mukasa was also director.
