Abstract The author's reputation in this country as our foremost Schubert scholar is sufficient indication of the value of these fourteen essays. All but two are entirely new and appear here for the first time. A total absorption in Schubert and his works informs all the essays, but they are the result of different facets of music scholarship; there are, for instance, detective studies, exciting and provocative analytical descriptions, and the use of discovery and conjecture to illuminate aspects of Schubert's creative personality. The three parts of the work are concerned with the music, the composer, and the manuscripts and editions. The first section contains a fascinating new discovery in the essay entitled 'The Genesis of the great C Major Symphony' and also a particularly valuable essay on 'Lazarus, or the Feast of Resurrection'. The most revealing of the four essays in the section on the composer is perhaps that which describes Schubert's relations with the Karntnerthor Theater. Careful, critical listing throughout, and particularly in the third section, makes this book a most reliable source of information.
