Abstract In October, 1975, the International Haydn Conference was held in Washington, D.C., during the last eight days of the Haydn Festival at Kennedy Center. Scholars and musicians from all over the world were brought together for the conference, participating in panel discussions, round tables, and workshops. This collection of Haydn studies is the meticulously edited result of those activities. The conference was organized around three broad topics: documentation, performance, form and style. Under the first rubric, the research tradition established through international collaboration was surveyed and recent developments described. Two round tables and six workshops were devoted to the relatively unexplored problems of performing Haydn's music. Well-known artists discussed and demonstrated their theories. The sessions on form and style covered a wide range of subjects, from a definition of "Classical style" to critical comparisons between the works of Haydn and his contemporaries. Participants in the conference were many of the greatest musicologists of the time. They not only read prepared papers, but also engaged in free and hearty interchange of ideas. This invaluable volume offers the reader a finely honed distillation of those events, edited by Jens Peter Larsen, internationally known Danish Haydn specialist, and his two American colleagues, Howard Serwer of the University of Maryland and James Webster of Cornell. The result will richly reward perusal by the music lover or intense study by the music scholar.
