Abstract This book will prove a welcome addition to a somewhat tenuous literature. This work, the fruit of a number of years' research, is both thorough and succinct, describing the origins of the instrumental group that revolutionized music in the seventeenth century. While this work has the merits of sound scholarship it also shows a practical approach, relating structure to style. This is not surprising since the author is an accomplished practicing violinist herself. After studying at the Royal College of Music, where Mr. Frank Howes who has written the foreword, was one of her professors, the author joined the Music Department of the University of Birmingham.
