Abstract In 1876 in the Catalan village of Vendrell, not far from Barcelona, there was born a man whose genius as a musician and devotion to the ideals of democracy have made him a legend in his own time. The great Spanish cellist Pablo Casals, a voluntary exile from his own country, has become an ambassador of freedom to the whole world. This book explores the story of Casals' life: as a child playing the broomstick cello his musician father made for him, as a brilliant student and protege of Spain's queen regent, his years as concert artist and conductor, his career through wars--and a terrible revolution in his homeland--to the triumphant culmination of his career at Prades and in Puerto Rico. Throughout his life Casals has been artist, composer, conductor, teacher, but he has never permitted his devotion to music to insulate him from his fellow men. As an exile in France he worked constantly in behalf of the refugees from Franco. He has played for kings and presidents--and refused to play when his conscience told him an artist must use his silence to protest injustice.
