Summary Smith had an active life in the Navy, seeing service in both war (on board the 'RATTLER' in the Anglo-Satsuma war, in which he was shipwrecked) and peace time. A large part of the memoir is devoted to his service on the 'Challenger' expedition under Nares and Thompson, and contains vivid anecdotes of his time in the navy.
