| Summary | Diaries of Hugh Rogers Kendall include a partial typescript copy of a diary kept on a voyage from Boston, Mass. to Calcutta, India on the Brig SMYRNA, 10 May- 7 July 1827 (missing 8 July 1827- 30 March 1828) and a typescript copy of a diary kept on a trip to purchase wool in Europe, 5 January- 20 May 1835. Entries from the Calcutta voyage include descriptions of sailing conditions; the weather; and life onboard ship, including an altercation with some sailors after they had been drinking, 5 July 1827. Entries from the trip to Europe include descriptions of sailing conditions, the weather, time spent with friends, social engagements, and difficulties purchasing wool. Locations of originals unknown. Also includes a memorandum of agreement for the purchase of the ship BENJA by Hugh Rogers Kendall, 9 October 1858; a typescript copy of a letter from Hugh Rogers to his son Benjamin Franklin Kendall, pertaining to the dispersion of his assets after his death, 26 November 1861; and genealogical information for the Kendall family. |
